The GPSMAP 196 is a powerful aviation portable that acts like a panel but goes from cockpit to land to water without missing a beat. With its crisp, grayscale screen, the 196 is an affordable introduction to Garmin's portable aviation products.

The WAAS-capable GPSMAP 196 has detailed map graphics, HSI steering guidance, Jeppesen; database and all the other pilot-friendly features you've come to expect from Garmin. Jeppesen Database Information
The GPSMAP 196 includes an internal Jeppesen database that provides location and facility information for thousands of airports, VORs, NDBs, and more. Updates to the Jeppesen database are available every 28 days online. The following information is provided:
- Airport--Identifier, facility name, city/state/country, latitude/longitude, field elevation, available fuel types, runway designations and layout, runway surface, runway length, runway width, runway lighting, communication frequencies, and published approaches.
- Weather--Frequencies associated with an airport (ASOS, ATIS, and AWOS).
- VORs--Identifier, facility name, city/state/country, location (latitude/longitude), frequency, service volume (high, low, terminal), and type (such as VOR-DME, TACAN, and VORTAC).
- NDBs--Identifier, facility name, city/state/country, location (latitude/longitude), and frequency.
- Intersections--identifier, nearest VOR, radial and distance from nearest VOR, location (latitude/longitude), and region/country.
- ARTCC--Air Route Traffic Control Centers.
- Airspace--boundaries (Class B, Class C, Control Zones, SUAs, and MOAs), controlling agency, and vertical boundaries.
- FSS--Flight Service Stations.
Pre-Loaded Americas Autoroute Basemap
The Americas Routable basemap includes the United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America, and covers an area from W180 to W30 Longitude, S60 to N72 Latitude. Also included is a high-level worldwide map with political boundaries and major cities.
Standard map coverage includes:
- Oceans, rivers, and lakes (greater than 30 sq. miles)
- Principal cities and a small amount of smaller cities and towns
- Major interstates and principal highways
- Political boundaries (state and international borders)
- Railroads
- Major Airports
